Aromatic substances have been in use for bathing and rituals for thousands of years throughout Europe and Asia, the Egyptians were the first to distil plants in order to extract their essential oils. They used them medicinally, in religious ceremonies, as beautifying the skin and face potions and perfumes; however, it was not until the 20th century that Rene-Maurice Gatterfosse developed what we now know as aromatherapy in France.
In the 1920’s he made an accidental discovery that lavender essential oil was wonderfully soothing and healing to minor burns. This set off a quest to explore the possible therapeutic applications of other essential oils, which are the basic tools of aromatherapy. Recently biochemists have isolated dozens of ingredients in essential oils that account for the amazing properties they have.
What are essential oils? Essential oils are highly fragrant essences that are found in the flowers, leaves , roots, grasses, peels, seeds, resins and barks of plants. These oils are produced from hundreds of different chemicals extracted by a distillation process that creates a pale runny liquid. Because essential oils are highly volatile, they can evaporate quickly. Aromatherapy works primarily through the sense of smell. The human nose is a remarkable sensitive organ. Your sense of smell is closely linked with your mood memory and emotions. Smells are perceived through the olfactory nerve, which has strong links to the limbic system of the brain, where emotions such as pleasure and sexual feelings are generated. The fragrance of the oils may affect this area of the brain.
Healing properties This therapy is a valuable method for dealing with stress. It is excellent too for dealing with ailments that are related to stress, such as premenstrual syndrome, anxiety, irritable bowel syndrome, hypertension, migraines and eczema to name just a few. It is recognised for easing pain and tension in tight overworked muscles. In addition to their therapeutic affect of their fragrance, essential oils have other healing properties. Some oils such as chamomile are anti- inflammatory, while others such as geranium stimulate the circulation and others such as tea tree help fight infection.
