By massaging certain points on the hands and feet it is possible to improve the health of every organ and body system and therefore encourage the body to work more efficiently.

What is Reflexology?

Like the eastern therapies of Acupressure, Acupuncture and Shiatsu, Reflexology works on the theory that health depends on the flow of energy throughout the body.  Wall paintings discovered in Egypt show that a form of foot massage was practiced there some 4000 years ago. Reflexology as we know it today owes its existence to an American ear, nose and throat specialist Dr William Fitzgerald.  In 1917 he developed the concept that parts of the body are intimately linked together in zones and that it is possible to anaesthetise one part of the body by simply applying pressure to another. These ideas were further refined in the 1930’s by physiotherapist Eunice Ingham, who decided that the various zones could best be accessed through the feet. She then went on to invent the familiar Reflexology maps of the feet.

The Benefits

A Reflexologist is not trained to diagnose or treat any specific medical conditions. They will treat the person holistically so that through improving the general state of health of the body, it is then in a better condition to start to heal itself. However Clinical Reflexologists may be able to point you in the right direction for a correct diagnosis by your GP, by highlighting areas of congestion and in balances within the relex points on the foot. Many reflexology research trials have also been extremely positive in treating specific conditions. The list continues to grow..

The most obvious benefit of Reflexology is that of stress release. Relieving tension in the body helps improve circulation, aids the elimination of waste and generally rebalances and re-energises the body.  Because of the effect of gravity the flow of blood back to the heart tends to be sluggish, this is why inorganic waste products such as uric acid and calcium crystals accumulate in the feet.

A Reflexologist will locate and break up these crystals, aiding their elimination from the body.  Any particular tender area of the foot will indicate a part of the body that is tense and congested; such an area will receive special attention in order to break up the crystals.

Reflexology can help with the menstrual cycle as well as allergies, hypertension, arthritis, back and neck problems, digestive problems, ear, nose and throat disorders, headaches and skin conditions.

A full consultation is carried out before any treatment can be undertaken. The therapist will want to know about your lifestyle, any medical problems / issues you may have and any medication that you are taking.  A full treatment will last for about 45mins.

Following The Treatment

It is sometimes possible that the eliminating systems of the body become more active in order to rid the body of unwanted toxic matter.  For example, treatment of a congested sinus may result in a cold; and constipation treatment can cause increased bowel movements. However, if treatment is correctly applied, these reactions should not be severe
