Eclipse Health Studio SUBUD

Subud is an international, spiritual association of people who share a unique experience known as the latihan. The latihan, an Indonesian word meaning exercise, enables people to receive deep spiritual experiences similar to those referred to by prophets of the great religions. Over time the latihan may bring emotional and physical well-being, clarity of purpose and deep understanding, yet there is no doctrine or study involved. Thousands of people from all cultures and backgrounds practise the latihan today. The process provides a significant opportunity for people from all religions, and also those who do not conform to an established religion, to follow a spiritual path together and in harmony.
The latihan has a strong connection with the spiritual essence of religious experience. If you look into any religion, whether it's Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism or Hinduism, you find that the people who started the religion had an experience of a direct 'receiving'; of being 'moved' by something that did not come from their own will. It is as if a power or grace was involved, which seems to have an intelligence that is beyond the human. Some people call that power God, Yahweh, Allah, or the Great Life Force. The reality of the latihan is being connected to this Force.
What is truly unique about Subud is that anyone can join and 'practise' the latihan. This means that for the first time, people from all religions and from all cultures are able to worship this Higher Power together. So Jews, Muslims, Christians etc. can continue to practise their religion as well as being in Subud. In fact, this inner experience corresponds to what is taught in religions, and can add a new dimension to the practice - adding the reality behind the words contained in scriptures and teachings.
How it works Subud members usually attend group latihans twice a week at their local Subud House/ hired premises (of which there are currently 70 in Britain). They arrive at a specific time and sit quietly for 15 minutes - women in one room, men in another. After this 'quiet time' a more experienced member (known as a helper) will stand and start the latihan. In some groups they may say, 'begin' or, 'relax and begin' beforehand so that all members start together. Each person then relaxes and surrenders to the power of God, which 'moves' them from within. During the latihan they may be moved to walk about, or dance, to cry, to laugh, or to be quiet and perhaps say the words of prayers - it is different for each person and even varies from one latihan to the next. The latihan usually lasts for half an hour, after which the members will sit quietly for a little while, before returning to 'ordinary life' once more.
There are benefits that can be felt from the latihan. Some benefits are immediate; for instance, a feeling of well-being, a lightness and/or a greater clarity about oneself and the world around. Other benefits are more long-term: some people experience improvements in health; others in how they relate to problems in their lives. It is different for each person and unique to their life and experiences. One can never predict how a latihan will evolve, as the process comes from deep within a person - beyond the ordinary understanding and beyond anything that can be predicted using the heart or mind. But although the process isn't in the control of the person experiencing it, this is not something to be scared of. Surrender can be stopped or lessened at any time, with no-one 'receiving' more than they are able to cope with. The process is experienced only at the pace that is appropriate for each person. All that can be done is to exercise patience and trust in the process, surrender to God and receive and follow what comes.
Where does the name Subud come from? The Name 'Subud' is the abbreviation of the words Susila Budhi Dharma. Susila means humane behaviour that is in accord with God's will. Budhi is the inner power within human beings. Dharma means surrender in following God's will.
The name Subud is a symbol, indicating that people may truly become human beings who have the qualities of susila, budhi and dharma.
